Tool is an American rock band, which was formed in Las Angeles in 1990. The band members include drummer Danny Carey, bassist Justin Chancellor, vocalist Maynord James Keenan, and guitarist Adam Jones. The band’s music was first dominated by heavy metal with the genre of thrash metal and alternative metal. Tool has won three Grammy Awards, performed numerous worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries. Since Tool incorporated visual arts and relatively long and complex releases, it is often described as a style-transgressing act and part of progressive and art rock.
The band released their first full-length album Undertow in 1993. The album included singles which were much heavier than the songs Tool performed before – however it is with this album that they started touring around the world. The concerts proved to be very popular, and this popularity led Undertow to be certified gold by the RIAA in 1993 and to receive platinum status in 1994. Tool’s single Sober won the band Billboard's "Best Video By A New Artist" award for the accompanying stop motion music video.
The band used to be the target of censorship, because some of their songs and lyrics dealt with unlawful actions and seemed controversial. However, it did not prevent Tool from doing what they did and in September 1995, they recorded their second album. At that time Tool’s basist D’Amour left the band and Justin Chancellor replaced him. With Justin Chancellor coming on board, recording of the already-begun Ænima continued. Eventually,it would win Tool their first Grammy Award..
Tool released the total of four studio albums, including Undertow in 1993, Ænima in 1996, Lateralus in 2001, and 10,000 Days in 2006. The band, though featuring quite specific music, has found its fans and is successfully performing in front of large audiences.
