Dirty dancing found its ticket to audiences worldwide by being a hit film back in 1987 created by Eleanor Bergstein. At present, London theaters still receive box office ticket sales as the musical version continues to people. Ticket sales also reach its peak in the US when the hit musical comes to the country.
Even in its film version, Dirty Dancing also has a musical theme. It was set in 1963, specifically in an American holiday camp. The main character is named Frances Houseman also known as “Baby” and the story revolves around her falling in love with a dance instructor while on a family holiday. The love and music serve as great ticket for this creation to attract audiences worldwide.
In the musical, Baby was born of an affluent family and she’s used to living in total comfort. Since her father is a doctor, everybody else expects her to finish college and the join in the Peace Corps to help save the world. People also expect her to marry a doctor eventually. During the course of the musical, she meets a dance instructor, named Johnny whom she attempted to impress by offering to help pay for the abortion of the instructor’s dancing partner. Left without a partner, the dance instructor takes in Baby as his partner’s replacement. It was during their training when the two find themselves falling for each other. However, their love affair is triggered to meet an end when the dance partner who had the abortion experienced a serious illness after going through the process. Because of this, Baby was left with no other choice but to seek the help of his own father. Once the father learned of her ties with Johnny, he bans her from meeting up with him again.
Still, Baby managed to sneak out and resume contact with Johnny. An unfortunate incident is yet to happen as someone sees Baby sneaking out of Johnny’s residence. This event serves as a ticket to unleash a series of events causing a great rift within Baby’s family.
The story still makes waves worldwide, causes ticket sales to boom, and millions of video copies sold up until this day.
Apart from the story itself, the musical theme also creates a very attractive way of marketing the material. The energy-driven performance and the hit songs used throughout the musical really propelled themselves as timeless classics that people continue to relive their romance and intensity during the musical presentations.
