Pepsi 400 Information

The Pepsi 400 is the name of the NASCAR Cup stock race. It is usually held on the Independence Day at the Daytona International Speedway, which is a speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Its a tri-oval track, which can host 168 thousand spectators. It a track not only for sports cars, but also for go-carts, motorcycles, pickup trucks, and stock cars.

There are 160 laps that the cars have to go. The total length is 400 miles (or, 640 km). The major corporate sponsor is the Pepsi Company. The first race was held in 1959. Its first name was the Firecracker 250 (there were only 250 miles to go); in 1963 it was renamed into Firecracker 400. Since 1985 till 1988 it was called the Pepsi Firecracker 400. The main idea was to create a major racing event, like the Daytona 500. Since 1998 the race has been held at night. A special lightning is used to light the track in the way that it does not disturb the drivers eyes.

From the very beginning the race was a USAC (the Unites States Automobile Club) Championship event, but after several crashes it was cancelled. Later, the NASCAR decided to take control over the race and made it a stock car race.

Since 1959 till 1987 the race was always held on the fourth of July, no matter which day of the week it was. But from 1988, the day of the race was moved to the weekend of the Independence Day, and it was held on Saturdays. Only in 1998 the Pepsi 400 was held in October. It was put off because of the fires in Florida State. This year it became a night show, though before it was held in the morning to escape from hot temperatures and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

The 2001-2006 races were broadcast by the NBC and the FOX stations (depending whether it was an odd or an even year). In 2007 and thereafter it will be televised by the TNT Company.

The 2005 and 2006 Pepsi race winner was Tony Stewart. He is a road racer who participates in sprint cars, Indy cars, and stock cars races. His current car is Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He has won several championships, including IROC Championship, NEXTEL Cup Championship, Winston Cup Championship, NASCAR Rookie Championship, USAC Triple Crown Championship, and IRL Championship.

He is an honorable member of the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame. From January 2007, he will be the host of a radio show (named Tony Stewart Live).

In 2007 the race will be held on the seventh of July (the Independence Day weekend).
