GFS Marketplace 400 Information

The GFS Marketplace 400 is the NASCAR (the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Nextel Cup car race, which is usually held at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn (Michigan). The first race was held in 1969. Originally it was a 600-mile race, but then it was decided to hold it as a 400-mile (or 643.7 km) competition. The overall number of laps is 200. The race was not held only once, in 1973, because its owner decided to replace it with another one (an Indy car race).

The Michigan International Speedway (the former Michigan Speedway) has the tri-oval shape. It covers the area of more than 1 200 acres (or 5 sq km). It is usually used for NASCAR racing. Opened in 1968, it still remains one of the fastest tracks.

During its long history the name of the race was changed eight times. Originally, in 1969, it was called the Yankee 600, but the following year the length of the distance was changed and it became the Yankee 400 race. From 1975 and during the following nineteen years the race was known as the Champion Spark Plug 400. In 1994 it was renamed into GM Goodwrench Dealer 400, and in 1997 into the DeVilbiss 400.

After signing a contract with a new sponsor, the Pepsi Company, the name was changed for the Pepsi 400 Presented by DeVilbiss, and from 1999 to 2001 in was known as Pepsi Presented by Meijer. The penultimate name of the race was the Pepsi 400 Presented by Farmer Jack.

The first 1969 winner was David Pearson. He was known as the Silver Fox. He won 3 Grand National Championships (in 1966, 1969, and 1968). In 1960 he was called the Rookie of the Year, and in 1998 he was named one of the NASCARs Fifty Greatest Drivers. In 1990 he was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and in 1993 – in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

In August 2006 Matt Kensen became the winner of the GFS Marketplace 400. He began his racing career at the age of sixteen. He became the winner of the track championships at Wisconsin International Raceway in 1994 and 1995. In 2000 he was nominated the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year, and later, in 2003 Matt Kensen became the Winston Cup champion. The following year he took the IROC (the International Race of Champions) prize. At present he is the second in the 2006 Nextel Cup Position. He is currently driving Ford.
