The Subway 500 is a Chase of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing for the Nextel Cup stock car race that takes place at the Martinsville Speedway that is in Martinsville, Virginia State. In the year 2004 the Martinsville Speedway was sold for $192 million. The first race of the Subway 500 took place in 1950 and Herbert Watson Thomas (April 6, 1923–August 9, 2000) was the first winner of the race. He was a NASCAR pioneer and was considered to be one of the series' best drivers in the 50's. Since 1950 the Subway 500 has been held annually. As far as the recent history of the car race is concerned, the names of Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, Ricky Rudd, Tony Stewart, Ricky Craven, Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson are worth mentioning. Jimmie Johnson won the Subway 500 in 2006 and is one of the best NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race car drivers driving the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS - the car of his teammate Jeff Gordon. The driver has never been below fifth in the final points of NEXTEL Cup standings and was second two times. In the year 2006 he managed to win NASCAR NEXTEL Cup championship. In the same year Johnson was the only driver to become th winner of the the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Championship, Allstate 400 at the Brickyard and Daytona 500. He also won three Coca-Cola 600s in a row.
