The Sony HD 500 is a NASCAR (the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Winston Cup event usually held in October. The first race occurred in 1965. The total number of laps is 393. The distance is 400 miles (or 644 km) long.

During its thirty-nine year history the race changed its name five times. The first seventeen years it was called the American 500. The following two years it changed its name into Walter W.Hodgdon American 500. From 1985 it was renamed into Nationwise 500. From 1987 and the following seven years it was known as AC Delco 500. And only in 1995 the number of the miles changed, and thus it acquired a new name AC Delco 400.
The first, 1965 winner of the Sony HD 500 was Curtis Turner, a NASCAR driver. He was a very successful racer. In all, he participated in 183 car races. In 1998 he was named one of the NASCARs Fifty Greatest Drivers. Twice he was inducted to the Hall of Fame: in 1992 to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and in 2006 to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
The last Sony HD 500 winner was Bill Elliott (in 2003). He was a part-time racer in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series. He became the winner for the first time in 1983 in the Winston West 500 (Riverside). In 1988 Bill Elliott won the Winston Cup Championship. He wasnt only very successful but also a very famous sportsman. Sixteen times (between the years of 1984 and 2001) he was named the Most Popular Driver. He is also one of the fifty NASCARs Greatest Drivers.
