Broadway’s production of Wicked the musical is based on the best-selling novel by Gregory MacGuire and is directed by 2003 and 2004 Tony Award winner Joe Mantello.
Staging is done by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento plus music and lyrics by Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz who teamed up with Winnie Holzman to condense the book’s complicated plot into a script for the musical. What was created was an award winning musical that has broken box office records and become a favorite since 2003.
From the perspective of Elphaba, the story travels back to the college days of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (soon to be the Good Witch of the North).
It shows the two’s initial hatred, eventual friendship, and ultimate diversion of paths to fulfill their different destinies. The musical delightfully offers solutions to mysteries such as how the monkeys got their wings, how the ruby red slippers came about, how the lovable tin man, cowardly lion, and scarecrow received their spells, and most importantly the true characters and misunderstandings of all are revealed. The musical offers an alternate ending after Dorothy falls into Oz that has captured audience’s hearts and imaginations.
