Take everything that you love about the MLB in the regular season-the homeruns, diving catches, pitching wars, and stolen bases-and now multiply that by 100. Give that new feeling about 10 cups of coffee and it finally comes close to the sensation produced by the MLB postseason. The MLB playoffs are simply exhilarating. 6 months of 30 teams playing 162 games each has finally boiled down into 8 teams vying to become the best in the world. It really doesn't matter what you did during the season because it doesn't matter in the postseason. If you don't perform, you go home. It's that simple. The uncertainty of the MLB playoffs is what makes October feel alive even when all the plant life outside begins to fade. You could've have been Mr. No Hitter throughout the year but if you give up that one crucial homerun (or even hit), you'll have to wait until the following April to pitch again. The postseason is that fickle. And while there's certainly a lot of skill involved in the postseason, a little luck always helps. A gust of wind, a good bounce, maybe some fan interference?whatever it takes to get that World Series trophy in the end.
Right now there are some extremely tight races going on in both the National and American Leagues. While the Angels are already guaranteed postseason passage, the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, and Minnesota Twins are all still in an interesting four-way dance. The Red Sox and Rays are in a battle for the AL East title while the Twins and White Sox are in an equally deadlocked battle in the AL Central. For the Red Sox and Rays, however, the losing team will most likely earn the Wild Card Berth, putting that much more pressure on the White Sox and Rays. In the National League, the Cubs are the front runners above all, guaranteed to be in the playoffs. In a replay of last year, the Phillies and Mets seem to be headed for a down-to-the-wire finish, as will the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. There is only room for four teams on each side, however. Time will tell who will enjoy the postseason madness.
