Iowa State Cyclones Background Ticket Information

The Iowa State Cyclones (or simply Clones) are the sports teams of the Iowa State University. The University participates in the Big Twelve Conference and the NCAA Division I. There are sixteen different teams in eleven sports. The mens sports are basketball, cross-country, football, golf, track and field, and wrestling. The womens sports are basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball.

The nickname of the sports teams of the Iowa University is the Cyclones. The name has a century-old history as it dates back to 1895. That year America suffered several severe cyclones, or tornados as they were once called. Also in 1895 the team of the Iowa State University defeated the Northwestern University playing the love game (36-0). The Chicago Tribune later described that Iowa cyclone devastated the rivalry.

The major school colors are cardinal and gold. The mascot of the Iowa State Cyclones is Cy the Cardinal. It was introduced only in 1954. In some way it is an allusion to the original name of the team (the Cardinals).

During their long career the Iowa State Cyclones participated in seven different Bowls, though they won only two of them (Insight.com Bowl in 2000, and the Independence Bowl in 2004).

Every year, beginning from 1977, there is a special game (called the Cy-Hawk series) between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Cyclones, who have always been the fiercest rivals. The winner of the game gets the Cy-Hawk Trophy. Out of thirty games the Iowa State Cyclones became the winners ten times (1978, 1980-1982, 1998-2002, and 2005).

There is a special award that is given every year to the most valuable Cyclones player. It is called Ralph A. Olsen Award (he was an old friend of Iowa state athletics). Among the most famous award receivers are Barry Stevens, Jeff Grayer, Victor Alexander, Doug Collins, Justus Thigpen, Fred Hoiberg, Dedric Willuoghby, Marcus Fizer, Jamaal Tinsley, Jake Sullivan, Curtis Stinson, Will Blalock, and others.

During the Iowa State Cyclones history there were several talented coaches, who helped the team to achieve much success. Here are some of them: Bill Chandler, Louis Menze, Glen Anderson, Johnny Orr, Tim Floyd, Larry Eustachy, and Wayne Morgan. The present coach of the Iowa State Cyclones is Greg McDermott.
