The Winter Classic could reach new heights this season with the league’s two biggest stars going head to head in the NHL’s annual outdoor game. Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will host Alexander Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals on New Year’s Day at Heinz Field (the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers). The fans in Steel City will hope the game will be as exciting as last year’s Winter Classic, when the Boston Bruins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime 2-1 within the confines of Fenway Park.
With the game less than two months away, Penguins and Capitals supporters will want to book their 2011 Winter Classic tickets soon. The Capitals are riding high early on in the season with the best record in the Eastern Conference. Ovechkin and his fellow Russian Alexander Semin are proving why so many experts believe they are the NHL’s best scoring tandem. Conversely, the Penguins are currently in fierce battle with the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. However, sports fans in Pittsburgh should expect Crosby and company to play their best at the Winter Classic.
