Back in the 1920s, a delightful mistake gave birth to one of the most entertaining shows in history. According to folklore, an exhibition game between two local Chicago basketball teams was scheduled to take place in the Savoy Ballroom. The only problem was that the local Vaudevillian team Globes & Trotter was scheduled there as well. So with a double booking to deal with (as well as thousands of anxious spectators), a quick compromise was reached: Let the comedy troupe join in on one of the teams. Though they hadn't the skill of their teammates or opponents, the audience fell in love with their outlandish antics (including the use of a ladder to slam dunk the ball). Despite being kicked out of the game on account of 13 collective technical fouls (including use of oil slicks, confetti, and dangerously long hook shots), they were invited to play with the team again the following night...and the night after...and the night after. Soon the team was no longer the Harlem Sting but the Harlem Globetrotters, and history was made. Since their inception in 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters have entertained over 118 countries in thousands of matches, and they are still going strong.
