One should expect an elite lineup of artists to perform inside a brand new, $1 billion dollar arena that’s located in the most populous borough of what’s generally considered the cultural capital of the world, but having to pick your jaw up from the pavement on Atlantic Avenue after examining the eye-popping list of acts set to take over the Barclays Center this holiday season should merit no shame. Brooklyn is certainly primed to bask in glory as the epicenter of live music throughout the rest of the year, and it’s obvious that the Barclays Center is determined to be more than simply an extraordinarily-expensive cultural landmark.
Plenty of the top draws in the music industry have already shined inside the Big Apple’s newest diamond, including Jay-Z’s with his seal-breaking show on September 28th, Barbra Streisand’s homecoming performance on October 12th, and the sellout Justin Bieber show that rocked the arena on November 12th. And looking ahead, surpassing Madison Square Garden will always be a daunting task, but it’s clear that the Barclays Center is determined to close out the year in style and burst into 2013 in full stride. There are more quality concerts on tap this holiday season in Brooklyn than most cities get all year. Here’s a breakdown of the magic to come, including a very special show to welcome in the New Year:
Wednesday, November 21st: Out on his first headlining arena tour since 2006, the inimitable Bob Dylan is back in support of his 35th studio album, Tempest. Bob Dylan tickets are available now and the shows are a perfect chance to experience this lyrical genius on stage with former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler, who played extremely successful standing-room-only dates with him in Europe last year.
Saturday, November 24th: Anyone looking to shake their hips to the sounds of salsa, bachata, bolero, merengue, and Afro/Latin fusion will certainly salivate in anticipation of Juan Luis Guerra in the Barclays Center’s inaugural Latin music concert. Get your Juan Luis Guerra tickets now and you’ll be in for a treat, as Juanes is set to join him on stage. These Grammy winners always deliver intensely-energetic performances.
Monday, December 3rd: Neil Young & Crazy Horse tickets are available now to see this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer take this sensational show on the road for the first time in eight years. The crew is touring again in support of their latest album, Americana, and it offers the precious chance to see this incredibly respected folk icon live on stage. And topping things off, Patti Smith and Everest will be joined them as the opening act.
Wednesday, December 5th: The magnificent Andrea Bocelli is set to serenade Brooklyn, and the Barclays Center is the only New York City venue that this internationally-revered singer will perform in this time around. The Tuscan tenor brings opera music to life like none-other, so purchase Andrea Bocelli tickets and prepare for his beautiful arias and molto romantico selections of classical tunes live on stage.
Saturday, December 8th : Still defying the notion that all good things must come to an end, the Rolling Stones continue to ward off the moss by hitting Brooklyn for their first U.S. performance on “The Stones—50 and Counting” tour. This tireless quartet is rocking again in celebration of fifty years going and the release of their latest album, GRRR!. Rolling Stones tickets go on sale Monday, November 19th at 10 am.
Monday, December 10th: Alternative rock fans can rejoice as the Smashing Pumpkins are coming to perform material from their latest full-length, Oceania, which is their first since 2007. Morning Parade will serve as the openers, and Smashing Pumpkins tickets to this show means you'll hear the hits that Billy Corgan and the crew have made over time, as the plan is to split the set with new and classic tunes.
Thursday, December 20th: Incredible singing, timeless song-writing, and legendary charm will all be on display as Leonard Cohen rolls into town. This Grammy-Award winner has been captivating audiences for decades, and with Leonard Cohen tickets you can hear his unmistakable voice live as he rounds out his sensational 2012 Old Ideas World Tour in the Big Apple.
Friday, December 21st: Fresh off of the release of Away from the World, which made them the first group in history to have six consecutive studio albums debut as No. 1, the Dave Matthews Band is back on the road. As much as anyone, these road warriors are renowned for their live shows, and they love thrilling arena audiences, so make sure to get your Dave Matthews Band tickets for a night to remember.
Sunday, December 30th and Monday, December 31st: Ensuring that 2012 is capped off with a bang, the Barclays Center is ending the year in spectacular fashion. Coldplay will be headlining the stage on December 30th with the support of Naturally 7, but if that weren’t enough, they’re pulling double duty with the man who popped the cork on Barclays in September. On the final night of the year, Coldplay will co-headline with none other than Brooklyn's own Jay-Z. This will mark the second time these heavyweights bring in the New Year together, as they graced the stage of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in 2010. Coldplay Tickets and Jay Z tickets for both shows go on sale November 17th at 10 am.
