Teasing an historic announcement ahead of the Dec. 3 press conference, Madison Square Garden delivered on the promise by revealing that legendary singer Billy Joel has been selected as the venue’s first music franchise and fourth overall joining the ranks of the NBA’s Knicks, NHL’s Rangers, and WNBA’s Liberty.

As noted at the top of the press conference, the New York native’s relationship with MSG dates all the way back to 1978, and since then, he’s played 46 shows with many, many more still to come. The franchise tag, named “Billy Joel at the Garden,” comes complete with its own website and logo and has essentially ensured ongoing monthly evenings with the “Piano Man,” who will perform at the venue indefinitely as long as the demand continues.

It appears the residency could be very long indeed, as he already sold out the four previously announced 2014 MSG concerts set for Jan. 27, Feb. 3 (the day after the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl), March 21, and April 18. During the presser, a fifth show also was announced for May 9, which fans may recognize as the date of Joel’s 65th birthday.

Additionally, he’s also set to make his first-ever appearance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on New Year’s Eve, and will travel to Florida shortly after to play shows in Fort Lauderdale (Jan. 7, 11), Tampa (Jan. 17), and Jacksonville (Jan. 22).

Rumors continue to hint at the possibility of a more extensive and widespread Billy Joel tour for 2014, as the singer himself has expressed the desire to hit up big cities potentially equipped with setlists covering the full spectrum of his noteworthy song catalog, as opposed to simply playing just “greatest hits.” Such was the case back in October when he played an impromptu show for roughly 2,000 fans at the intimate Paramount Theater in Long Island.
