It helps to think of every music festival lineup like the tasting menu at a local trendy restaurant, where you can sample universally beloved dishes—like homemade mac ‘n’ cheese—alongside experimental treats. At the very least, you know you’ll have an interesting experience trying out something new, while still safely investing in something you’re guaranteed to like. The same is true for most major music festivals, which offer access to a host of fantastic lesser-known musicians, while also stabilizing the lineup with some tried-and-true favorites. This year, two festivals in particular—the similarly named Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival and Voodoo Music and Arts Experience—have cooked up a tasty array of performers sure to please any palate.
Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival announced its lineup for the Aug. 9-11 music-food-wine-extravaganza in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The headliners—Paul McCartney, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, and Nine Inch Nails—will perform sets everyone and their mother (especially in the case of Sir Paul) is familiar with, but still loves to hear a million times over. The rest of the Outside Lands 2013 lineup features a little bit of everything. Get a taste of New Orleans jazz with Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue; take fashion notes from the fantastically bizarre Karen Oh of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; or bust out your Members Only jacket for the nostalgic Hall and Oates set. Secondary musicians appearing include Grizzly Bear, Band of Horses, Willie Nelson, Vampire Weekend, Matt and Kim, Kurt Vile and the Violators, and Chromatics, among others.
New Orleans—the undisputed birthplace of jazz—would never deign to be left out of the festival circuit, and so upped the ante with the appropriately named Voodoo Music and Arts Experience festival that sprawls over the New Orleans City Park annually each fall. This year, the festival snagged legends Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails as headliners for the Nov. 1-3 gathering. DJs and electronica artists will also be out in full swing at Voodoo fest, highlighting the talents of Calvin Harris, Bassnectar, AfroJack, and Boys Noize. As of mid-April, the full Voodoo 2013 lineup has yet to be announced, but the early list promises appearances from Cults, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Paramore, and Alkaline Trio.
While these two festivals don’t approach for another few months, fans are already drooling over the musicians confirmed to appear. Beat the rush by purchasing Outside Lands tickets and Voodoo Fest tickets today through the Vivid Seats marketplace.
