Over the past month, non-sports fans have been subject to an inundation of basketball aficionados frantically checking the advancing college teams while raving about seeds and upsets. This month-long obsession has become an annual tradition across the nation, but a quiet few remain ambivalent, feeling alienated by an avalanche of social media updates from family and friends bemoaning their ruined brackets.
Luckily, for fans of Broadway, the theater-minded folks behind Broadway.com constructed their own customized elimination-format tournament this year, pitting 64 of the most popular musicals in history against one another to determine the ultimate fan favorite. It may lack the nail-biting anticipation of a buzzer-beating three-pointer, but the poll-based tournament has caused musical fans considerable stress as they weighed their allegiances in matchups between classic productions, like the duel of familial favorites The Sound of Music and The Lion King.
The first round of “March Musical Madness” appeared on the theater-centric site on March 18, allowing the public to vote for the favorite musical out of matched-up pairs. The tournament led to a theatrical championship match, setting Wicked against Les Miserables. On April 10, the results finally came in, showing a majority of fans prefer the modern tale of the Wicked Witch of the West. The complete musical bracket can be found here.
Wicked, which is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, has proven to be one of the most astoundingly popular musicals of the past decade. Providing a dramatic back story to L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the musical draws in elements of the beloved classic tale, entwining it with the music and lyrics of Broadway legend, Stephen Schwartz. Since its premiere in 2003, Wicked has consistently been one of the highest-grossing musicals during each week of its ongoing runs. Currently, the fan favorite can be seen all across the country, hitting over 30 cities, including Dallas, Texas, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. Vivid Seats has a wide selection of Wicked tickets for the production, which is scheduled to run through 2014.
Les Miserables, the world’s longest running musical, has never been more popular than today, thanks in part to the 2012 award-winning film starring Hollywood actors Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, and Russell Crowe. A heart-wrenching story of love, redemption, revenge, and revolution, Les Miserables has been translated into 21 languages since the first production premiered in 1985. Currently on a North American tour, fans can see Les Miserables live on stage during week-long runs in major cities like Baltimore, Las Vegas, and Vancouver through June 2013.
