    Tony Awards 2014

On June 8, the Tony Awards 2014 ceremony was held at New York City’s Radio Music Hall, crowning a new class of excellent theater stars and productions. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, which had the most nominations with 10 this year, took home the top honor for best musical, and writer Robert L. Freedman also won best book for the production. Best revival was awarded to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and its stars—Neil Patrick Harris and Lena Hall—also took home Tonys in their respective categories. Both of these musicals also tied for the most wins, with four each, out of any production for the night.

On the play front, the Lyndon B. Johnson-centric All the Way earned the award for best play, and “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston earned his first Tony Award in his debut role as the 36th President of the United States. The show is currently on the last month of its limited engagement at the Neil Simon Theatre, where it is expected to close on June 29.

Audra McDonald, who is currently starring as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, won the top award for best actress in a play, bringing her total Tony Awards count to six. With the win, McDonald has become the only stage actress to win all four acting categories, as well as the actress with most Tony wins of all time. One the other side of the spectrum, Jessie Mueller, who stars in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, won her first Tony Award for her role as the GRAMMY-winning musician behind dozens of acclaimed pop songs like “I Feel the Earth Move” and “It’s Too Late.”

Other notable winners of the night include James Monroe Iglehart, whose acclaimed turn as the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin earned him the award for featured actor in a musical. Christopher Barreca of Rocky the Musical took home the award for best scenic design, in part for the regulation-size boxing ring that features into the musical’s big fight scene.
