On Sept. 3, Billboard unveiled the newest edition of its mainstream albums chart to reveal Ariana Grande’s sophomore record, My Everything, has taken the top slot. In its first week, the 2014 album sold more than 168,000 copies to unseat Wiz Khalifa’s Blacc Hollywood from No. 1. Later this month, Grande will enjoy yet another career milestone when she makes one of her biggest performances to date at Las Vegas’ iHeartRadio Music Festival, Sept. 19-20.
The iHeartRadio Music Festival lineup for 2014 was revealed on July 23, and, in addition to Grande, the roster includes dozens of acts that are at the forefront of this year’s Billboard charts. Australian import Iggy Azalea, who was featured on Grande’s huge lead single, “Problem,” also will be on stage at the fest to perform hits like her own “Fancy,” which spent seven weeks atop the Hot 100 singles chart this year to become Billboard’s official Song of the Summer.
On Aug. 27, Taylor Swift also charged into Billboard at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with the lead release from her forthcoming pop-oriented album, 1989. The song, “Shake It Off,” is sure to be featured at Swift’s headlining set on Friday of the iHeartRadio Music Festival, in addition to other fan favorites from her previous three chart-topping albums.
Also performing on Friday will be U.K. rock giant Coldplay, whose 2014 album, Ghost Stories, became the band’s fourth consecutive No. 1 album in the U.S. when it was released in May. The upcoming Las Vegas show will be one of the only chances to see the “A Sky Full of Stars” group in North America this year, as the band has only played in two other U.S. cities to promote the album.
On Saturday, One Direction will make a rare U.S. festival appearance at this Las Vegas arena in the middle of its North American tour promoting the 2013 release Midnight Memories. The album debuted at No. 1 last fall, making One Direction the only act to debut in the top slot of the Billboard 200 with its first three records.
Two major country acts, Eric Church and Zac Brown Band, also have been booked for the iHeartRadio Music Festival lineup this year. Church’s 2014 album, The Outsiders, was his second straight release to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Zac Brown Band is still touring in support of 2012’s Uncaged, which also was the outfit’s second Billboard 200 No. 1.
iHeartRadio Music Festival Village Boasts 11 Unique Acts
In addition to the main event’s headliners, fans in Sin City also can check out the handful of acts performing at the supplemental iHeartRadio Music Festival Village on Sept. 20, highlighted by a few that have accomplished notable Billboard feats of their own.
The aforementioned Iggy Azalea will pull double duty, taking the village stage in the morning before making an appearance inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena at night, though arguably the most anticipated performance of all will come courtesy of the boys of 5 Seconds of Summer. The rising pop group made headlines in July when its self-titled first album reached the top of the Billboard 200, marking the best debut for an initial full-length album since Daughtry in 2006. Magic! also is set to appear and fans are sure to hear a live rendition of the band’s hit single, “Rude,” which has enjoyed several weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, while fellow performer Lil Jon will likely delight audiences with his and DJ Snake’s “Turn Down For What,” that also peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Other acts featured on the iHeartRadio Music Festival Village 2014 lineup include Neon Trees, Kacey Musgraves, Childish Gambino, The Pretty Reckless, Jake Miller, Nico & Vinz, and Fences.
