Social media may be dominated by the likes of Justin Bieber, One Direction, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga, but the road belonged to 54-year-old superstar, Madonna. The envelope-pushing performer beat out everyone to claim 2012 top tour honors (in terms of gross) thanks to her sold-out MDNA Tour. According to Billboard Boxscores, which tallied total gross, attendance, number of shows, and sell-outs from Nov. 9, 2011 to Nov. 13, 2012, Madonna raked in an astounding $228,406,085 in ticket sales, with a total attendance of 1,635,176.
Fellow longtime rockers Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band followed in second with $199,371,791, while Rogers Waters rounded out the top three with $186,466,703 in revenue of his own. The trio each performed 72 shows, but only Madonna sold out each and every one.
Fierce rival to Madonna, Lady Gaga, checked in at No. 6, tallying a perfect 65 sell-outs to total $124,879,545 and 1,111,099 in attendance. With only 29 shows, 28 of which were sell-outs, Justin Bieber was reduced to No. 20 on the list with $30,667,737, while Taylor Swift collected $26,310,160 over 21 shows (all sell-outs) to finish in 24th, and One Direction failed to make the top 25.
At No. 12 was Barbra Streisand, who celebrated a return to the stage with 12 sold-out shows, which brought in $40,657,170, and 154,287 in attendance, while violinist/composer/conductor Andre Rieu performed a whopping 99 shows to finish just ahead of her in 10th with $46,785,717 in revenue.
In addition to Swift, several other country artists populated the list, including Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw (No. 7), Jason Aldean (No. 13), Lady Antebellum (No. 14), Brad Paisley (No. 16), and Rascal Flatts (No. 25).
