It may not be a full-fledged tour just yet, but it appears the “Piano Man” will have something in the works in 2014. For starters, Billy Joel has at last booked a date with Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on none other than New Year’s Eve, which will mark his first-ever concert at the venue.
The news came just weeks after the singer abruptly announced a single performance at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, N.Y., which took place on Oct. 16. During that appearance, the sold-out crowd of less than 2,000 people was treated to an eclectic mix of songs that included many Joel had not played live in some time. Rare tracks such as “Vienna,” “The Nylon Curtain,” and “Blonde Over Blue,” were interspersed with classics like “New York State of Mind,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Piano Man,” and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” which is featured in the video below.
Joel also reportedly told the crowd at the conclusion of the night, “Maybe we’ll see you soon,” which now appears to be a reference to the forthcoming NYE 2014 concert. It’s anyone’s guess as to what kind of setlist future shows may hold, but the overwhelming sentiment from the Paramount show displayed a strong desire to keep audiences on their toes.
After the New Year’s Eve gig, confirmed shows are a bit scattered as of early November, but it has been widely speculated that Joel will announce a full concert slate at some point down the road. In the meantime, all that has been released are a handful of Florida dates including two nights at the BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale (Jan. 7 and 11), and one show at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Jan. 22.
