When news of Andy Samberg’s departure from Saturday Night Live broke last May, many wondered what the future would hold for the classic SNL Digital Short. Though the current season has produced popular pre-recorded segments featuring Louis C.K. and Bruno Mars, most agreed they just haven’t been the same as The Lonely Island productions.
It appears Samberg and company were listening, as the crew teamed up with recent host Adam Levine of Maroon 5, and musical guest, Kendrick Lamar, to produce the group’s latest instant classic, which was unveiled during the Jan. 26 SNL episode. The video for “YOLO,” of the popular Internet meme and popularized by rapper Drake, marked the triumphant return of The Lonely Island to Studio 8H, complete with just the right amount of parody from founding members Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone.
Despite the extended break, the trio seemed to have picked up right where they left off, giving fans a reliable dose of catchy, clever, and utterly entertaining lyrics. In just the few days following its premiere, the song skyrocketed to the top of the iTunes charts in the Comedy Songs category for the U.S. and Canada.
