Arthur Ira Garfunkel is a notable singer, songwriter, and actor, who was born on November 5, 1941. He is best known as a member of the folk duo Simon and Garfunkel.
Arthur met his future singing partner, Paul Simon, when he was studying in the sixth grade. Between 1956 and 1962, the boys were performing together as Tom & Jerry. Arthur attended Columbia University in the early ‘60s. There he was singing with the Kingsmen, which is an all-male a cappella group.
In 1963, Arthur and Paul reorganized the band under their own names as Simon and Garfunkel.
The following year, they released their 1st album, entitled Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. on Columbia Records. However, it did not become a critical success, and the group effectively split again. In 1965, the band’s producer Tom Wilson lifted the song "The Sound of Silence" from the album, redubbed an electric backing onto it, and released it as a single. It went to no. 1 on the Billboard pop charts. The duo reunited and became one of the most popular bands of the ‘60s, releasing 5 albums. However once again, the band split, citing personal differences and divergence in career interests. That happened after 1970’s release Bridge Over Troubled Water, which became one of their most critically acclaimed records.
During the ‘70s, Art Garfunkel released a couple of solo albums. Though he did not reach the heights that the duo had reached, Art still scored hits with "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Bright Eyes", and "All I Know", which reached no. 9 in the United States. A version of the song "Bright Eyes" appeared in the film Watership Down.
Art Garfunkel performed the theme song for the popular TV series "Brooklyn Bridge". In 1998, the performer sang "The Ballad of Buster Baxter" for an episode of the cartoon Arthur.
In 2003, Arthur made debuted as a songwriter on his Everything Waits to Be Noticed album. He worked together with singers and songwriters Maia Sharp and Buddy Mondlock. The record represented some of Art’s strongest solo performances and had a few songs, whose origins were poems written by Garfunkel. The album was recognized as his first true effort at songwriting. The same year, Garfunkel and Simon reunited again and tried to bury their disagreements once and forever. The 2003/2004 world tour that followed became a big success. After it, the performers went their own ways.
In 2006, Art Garfunkel signed with Rhino Records. His first Rhino/Atco record entitled Some Enchanted Evening was released in the US on January 30, 2007. In February 2007, during an interview with German journalists, Art Garfunkel expressed his sincere interest in reuniting with Simon on a new release.
