Arturo Sandoval History and Background Information
Arturo Sandoval is a well-known jazz trumpeter and pianist from Cuba. Beginning with his early years, Sandoval became obsessed with jazz recordings by Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie. In fact, Sandoval met Gillespie in 1977, who became Arturo’s mentor and colleague. Together they played concerts in Europe and Cuba. Sandoval's life became the subject of the 2000 TV film For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, starring the famous Andy Garcia.
The talented Sandoval is associated with many musicians, but the most important was probably Dizzy Gillespie, who has been referred to as “spiritual father” by Sandoval himself.
more Dizzy always wanted to hear the music of the black neighborhoods where musicians performed a popular style of rumba, called guaguanco. Once, Arturo offered to take Gillespie around, and only later that day Sandoval revealed himself as a musician, when he got up on stage and started to perform.
In 2006, Sandoval opened a jazz venue in Miami Beach and called it The Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club. Since its opening, the club has seen top-notch jazz performers as well as young talents on stage. The acts have included Joshua Redman, Omar Sosa, Roy Haynes, Roberta Flack, Moe Goldstein, The Bad Plus, and Danilo Perez. Arturo Sandoval himself plays at his club at least once in a month.
