The Backstreet Boys originally consisted of A.J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell. The group was invented by Lou Pearlman and he started them out performing at shopping malls and Sea World. In 1996, the group first had success in Europe and in 1997 broke into the U.S. with the their self-titled album. Their success was interrupted by family deaths, necessary surgeries, and numerous lawsuits against Lou Pearlman who had been taking an unusually high percentage from their checks. Nonetheless, they received numerous awards, new management, and released a new album, Millennium, to become the best-selling album of 1999. In 2000, they released Black & Blue with a worldwide promotions tour done in 100 hours. In 2001, the band went on their extremely costly “Black & Blue Tour.” The tour had to be postponed due to A.J.’s check-in to rehab for alcohol, drug use and depression along with the September 11th attacks. They went on hiatus from 2002-2005 and in 2005 they released the platinum, Never Gone. The boys went on to complete solo albums and in 2005, Kevin left the band to start a family. In 2007, the remaining members released Unbreakable, this time incorporating live instruments and heading on a worldwide tour. The Backstreet Boys are due out to release yet another album in the spring of 2009.
