The 1960s saw The Beatles in the height of their success and popularity. This incited a kind of cult following among fans. Beatlemania was used to describe the intense frenzy among fans; especially among young teenage fans towards The Beatles. This was even more intense at the inception of their success. The term Beatlemania was coined from the conjunction of the words 'Beatles' and 'mania'. It is believed to have been phrased in 1963 by one Andi Lothian, a Scottish promoter of music. The first printed mention of the word Beatlemania was in a news story in The Daily Mirror of 2nd November, 1963.The news story was about a Beatles' performance of the previous day that was held in Cheltenham. Beatlemania spread into the United States especially after the Beatles' performance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964.
Beatlemania was an intense activity of fans during the Beatles' concerts and during their arrival and departure to different locations. Fans were known to scream so loud during concerts that sometimes the actual music was suppressed. Fans across the world known to be hit with Beatlemania later came to be referred to as Beatlemaniacs. Beatlemania was also the name of a Broadway musical play that was based on the music and life of The Beatles. They had a total of 1006 performances between 1977 and 1979. In 1978 it won a Tony Award for "Best Lighting Design".
