Blues singer and songwriter Bonnie Lynn Raitt was born in Burbank, CA. She is the daughter of the famous Broadway musical star John Raitt.
The girl began playing guitar in her childhood. In 1970, a reporter from Newsweek Magazine saw the singer and began to spread word of her lovely performance. From that very day scouts from record companies started attending her shows to watch her perform. Bonnie decided to accept an offer with Warner Bros. Company. Very soon, the debut album was released, entitled Bonnie Raitt (in 1971). The release was very well received by the music press. Many praised Raitt’s skills as an interpreter and as a bottleneck guitarist. That was probably due to the fact that at that time few women in popular music, who had strong reputations as guitarists.
In 1975, Bonnie began to receive greater press coverage, including a cover story for Rolling Stone Magazine. By now, Bonnie has experimented with different producers and various music styles. She has also begun to adopt a more mainstream sound.
1977's Sweet Forgiveness became the first true commercial breakthrough for the singer. It happened after the release of a hit single in her cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway."
For her next release, 1982's Green Light, the singer attempted to revisit the sound of her earlier compositions. However, to her surprise, many of her fans and press members would compare her new music to the burgeoning New Wave movement. The record received her strongest reviews in years. Raitt’s sales did not improve and this had a severe impact on her relationship with her recording company.
In 1986, a critical and commercial disappointment, Nine Lives was released. It was her last new recording for Warner Bros.
At the end of 1987, Bonnie Raitt joined Jennifer Warnes and k.d. lang as female background vocals for Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night, which is Roy Orbison's television special. The early ‘90s the musician spent working on new material. During this time, Bonnie considered signing with Paisley Park, Prince's own label. However, their negotiations ultimately fell through. Instead, the musician began recording a mix of pop and rock under the guidance of Don Was at Capitol Records.
After over 20 years of singing and recording popular music, the singer managed to achieve great success with her tenth album, which was released in 1989 (Nick of Time). It went to the top of the United States charts as well as won 3 Grammy Awards. Raitt also walked away with a fourth Grammy Award for her duet "In the Mood" together with John Lee Hooker.
