Brian Wilson is back and better than ever
The Beach Boys suffered a great loss as their main songwriter Brian Wilson withdrew from the group due to sever mental illness and substance abuse. After being diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and succumbing to the will of crazed psychologist Eugene Landy, Brian Wilson finally came to his own in 1992. He had released an unsuccessful solo album prior to his departure from The Beach Boys and released a second in 1998 entitled,
Imagination. He started touring again, performing
Pet Sounds all the way through to eager audiences who had scrounged for Brian Wilson tickets.
more In 2004 he released
Smile (37 years after it had been created) to rave reviews. Now back with a brand new album,
That Lucky Old Sun, the album (with the title track a cover of the Louis Armstrong song) has topped the charts, something that Wilson hasn’t done since the release of
Pet Sounds with The Beach Boys. The album is similar in theme to previous work with The Beach Boys as it celebrates life in southern California. It is described by Rolling Stone to be “a musical love letter to his native Los Angeles”. Brian Wilson will be performing the album all the way through on his tour.
