Renowned mandolin player Chris Thile is one of the founding members of the progressive bluegrass trio Nickel Creek (along with Sean and Sara Watkins). In 2005, the band released Why Should the Fire Die. It received massive critical acclaim and sold over a quarter of million units. Chris Thile has also released his solo albums, the intricate Not All Who Wander Are Lost, Deceiver, and How to Grow a Woman from the Ground. The latter was his 5th solo project released by Sugar Hill Records in September 2006.
The musician’s career has been quite successful, especially for one so young. Thile has been awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association award for Mandolinist of the Year. He has also earned several annual nominations.
In late summer 2006, Nickel Creek announced that at the end of the year they would no longer be recording together. The band’s tour that is scheduled through 2007 will be their last one for an indefinite period. In December 2006, Chris was nominated a Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance for his beautiful song The Eleventh Reel.
Currently, the musician is touring with the How to Grow a Band, with whom Thile has recorded How to Grow a Woman from the Ground. The group consists of Chris Thile, Greg Garrison, Chris Eldridge, Gabe Witcher, and Noam Pikelny.
The musician has recently received the BBC's 2007 Folk Musician of the Year award. In 2008, he will release a collaboration record with fellow virtuoso Edgar Meyer.
