Jazz pianist David Warren Brubeck is often regarded as a genius in his field. Brubeck has written a number of jazz standard compositions, like "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke". The style of the musician ranges from refined to bombastic. It often reflects his mother's attempts at classical training as well as his improvisational skills.
In 2006, Dave Brubeck received University of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal. It is the oldest and most prestigious award given to American Catholics, during the University's Commencement.
Nowadays, David Brubeck continues creating new compositions, including orchestrations and ballet scores. He usually tours about eighty cities each year. Recently, he has visited about twenty European cities in autumn. However, from his 85th anniversary, his European performances will be limited. His major area of focus is the United States, where he still presents new works, like, for instance, the Cannery Row Suite, and a project with a big band.
Brubeck’s quartet now includes saxophonist and flautist Bobby Militello, bassist Michael Moore, and drummer Randy Jones. Recently, he has also worked with the London Symphony Orchestra.
At the 2006 Monterey Jazz Festival, Brubeck presented to the audience his commissioned work called "Cannery Row Suite," which is a jazz opera drawn from the characters in John Steinbeck's American classic writing. Dave Brubeck’s performance of the jazz opera, including a number of jazz standards with his present band, became the buzz of the 49th Monterey Jazz Festival.
