Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947, Elton John attended the Royal Academy of Music in London. He started his first band, Bluesology in 1961. In 1967 he paired up with Bernie Taupin and in 1968 they became staff songwriters for the DJM Music Label. Bernie would write lyrics and Elton would compose the music. Combined with producer Gus Dudgeon, they composed 14 albums between 1970-76. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, held a number of American Number One hit singles and a two month run at the top of the Billboard Top 100 to become a classic.

Elton John performed with John Lennon at what became Lennon’s final concert in 1974 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Elton John continued to churn out other number one hits in the UK and US throughout the seventies even while working with other lyricists. The 90’s brought Elton John a Grammy and Acaedmy Award for his work on composing music for the Lion King. The song “Candle in the Wind 1997” dedicated to his good friend Princess Diana holds the title of biggest selling single of all time at over 33,000,000 copies sold. In 1998, Elton John was knighted from HM Queen Elizabeth II for “services to music and charitable services.” He has continued to re-release albums and remains the best selling male artist of all time.
