After the release of Eminem's first album, he ran into legal battles with the mother of his chills and his own mother as well. References were made of his mother of her drug use and she fought back with a lawsuit for defamation. She sued for $10 million in damages. A settlement was reached in 2001 for $25,000 with over $23,000 being paid to her attorney by court order.
Other controversies that stemmed from the lyrical content of his second release, The Marshall Mathers LP were accusations of Mathers being homophobic which was nominated for a Grammy Award. Although Eminem responded to the accusations with claims that his lyrics were not to be taken in a serious fashion, the gay rights group GLAAD organized a boycott of the Grammys. The response by Mathers involved a performance of the song "Stan" with openly gay singer Elton John. Though Eminem claims to have not known that the singer was gay, he is quoted telling MTV interviewer Kurt Loder:
"Of course I'd heard of Elton John but I didn't know he was gay. I didn't know anything about his personal life. I didn't really care, but being that he was gay and he had my back, I think it made a statement in itself saying that he understood where I was coming from."
