A present rodeo appeared from a working cowboy and his duties on the pasture. After a hard labor of moving livestock through the country riding rude broncs was only for fun and competition. The sport of rodeo developed from these friendly and informal competitions in 1800s.
It was in 1936 that rodeo evolved into professional sport. That year a small group of cowboys refused to participate in rodeo in Boston as the promoters were taking nearly all profits from the show. This group formed the Cowboy Turtles Association which became the Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1945 and 1975 was renamed the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Nowadays the association counts nearly 7000 cowboys members. Today rodeo is very popular and high-stakes sport. On the whole more than 20 million tickets are sold for rodeo shows every year worldwide and even more people watch them on TV. For most of the participants rodeo is not just a job and an opportunity to earn their living but a way of life.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is considered to be the largest rodeo in the world and the second largest livestock show of the world dating back to 1931. Only the best cowboys and cowgirls are allowed to take part in this event. The home of Rodeo Houston is Reliant Stadium which was designed specially for football and rodeo events. Nearly two million visitors attend the event annually. The three week show includes livestock judging, bull riding, carnival, parade, concerts, barbecue and wine competitions, trial rides.
The three week show invites top cowboys to compete for the 1st prize (748.000 at the 2006 Show). Winners of each of the performances leading up to the final are paid bonus money. There are several types of events. For example the timed events are barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping and tie-down roping. The roughstock events are bareback bronc riding, bull riding and saddle bronc riding. During the event numerous exhibitions are held where you can buy everything from clothes to farming equipment.
Each of rodeo events during Rodeo Houston is accompanied by concerts with popular musicians in country, latin and hip hop music. The previous years show featured such stars as Bon Jovi, George Strait, Alan Jackson and others.
During the rodeo you can also visit the largest livestock show in the country. During this event different livestock animals are exhibited and judged on certain traits. Livestock shows are gaining popularity mainly among youth nowadays. At the 2004 Show there were nearly 33.000 animals exposed. Young people are the main buyers of tickets for such kind of events as they give them opportunity to communicate with other youth from their country and all over the world.
