American singer and songwriter Iris DeMent's musical style combines the genres of country and folk music. In her childhood, the girl was exposed to and influenced by country and gospel music. The singer writes "storyteller" songs about her daily experiences in simple language.
The musician’s first album, entitled Infamous Angel, was released in 1992. It explored such themes as religious skepticism that lives in a town, "where nothing good ever lasts", and forgiving human frailness.

During her music career, Iris DeMent has sung duets with many well-known musicians like Steve Earle, John Prine, and Emmylou Harris. She was also featured on the albums of several other notable performers. The singer has often made appearances on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, and starred in the film Songcatcher. She played the character Rose Gentry and sang on the soundtrack.
