The Iron Maiden is one of the most influential bands in the 20th century. The band was formed in 1975 by Steve Harris who was a former member of Gypsy’s Kiss and Smiler. The Iron Maiden name was thought of by Harris when he saw the movie “The Man in the Iron Mask.” The band started residency at The Cart & Horses pub in London and ticket sales were ok in the first few gigs they made. In the first six months, the band kept changing singers and players and it drastically affected ticket sales and concert gigs even though they already had a strong following in London.
In 1976, the band temporarily split up due to disagreements among band members. They did try to regroup in 1977 with new members but the rows within the bank only contributed to an even lesser number of people in ticket lines. By 1978, things began to pick up for the bank when they hired Paul Di’Anno in the vocals. Ticket sales were picking up and the band kept on playing gigs and concerts until 1981. They proved to be the band to watch when they sold 5,000 copies of recorded demos within weeks of being released. It contained only three songs and one song entitled “Prowler” even made it to the number one spot in Neal Kay’s Heavy Metal Soundhouse.
By 1979, after several changes in band members, the band finally landed a recording contract with EMI. They had their first album released in 1980 and it went to the number 4 in the UK Albums Chart within the week of its release. They were eventually coined the “new wave” of British heavy metal. Ticket lines were piled up after the band was selected to open for KISS in the European leg of their tour. They also had a stint with Judas Priest and help boost ticket sales for the band.
The band kept on generating hits one after the other. Ticket outlet sales were most of the time sold out but again hit a snag in 1990s when they hit an all time low in ticket sales and the band was playing in smaller concert venues. But this was just temporary because before the new millennium, they already had a tremendously successful tour when the band reunited with guitarist Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson. Ticket outlets were sold out and a computer game was even released to commemorate the tour.
The Iron Maiden continues to be a big influence in the Heavy Metal industry. Online ticket stores continue to generate huge sales on their world tours especially now that they have already been included in the Hollywood Rock Walk.
