John Fogerty: From CCR to Solo Work
John Fogerty is best known for his part in the band Creedence Clearwater Revival whos top songs include “Susie Q”, “Proud Mary” and “Bad Moon Rising”. Fogerty was responsible for a majority of the songwriting and vocals for CCR, but his insistence as the leader for those roles in the band led to resentment by the other members. His brother Tom Fogerty finally quit the band in 1971. The other members were given an ultimatum to remain in the band and split their half of songwriting amongst each other (John would have the other half of the album to himself of course) or leave. They gave in and the result was that their last 1972 album, Mardi Gras, did not sell well and thus the band broke up afterwards. Fogerty then went solo and had his share of success mixed in with failures. He fell off the music map for a period of eight years when he bought a cabin in Oregon and hunted elk, unable to write any new music. He made two comebacks, one from roughly 1985-1993, and the other from 1997-present. During his second comeback he won a Grammy for his album, Blue Moon Swamp, in 1997.
