Originally called the Golden Gate Rhythm Section and intended to only be a backup group for local Bay area artists, Journey started in San Francisco in 1973 under the management of Santana manager Herbie Herbert. The original members were: Neal Schon (formerly of Santana) on lead guitar, Gregg Rolie on keyboard and lead vocals, Prairie Prince on drums, Ross Valory on bass, and George Tickner on rhythm guitar. No longer wanted to be merely a backup group, the band changed to a jazz-fusion style. Along with the change, the band held a radio contest to re-name them. After no luck, a roadie suggested the name “Journey” and it stuck. In 1973 Journey made their debut at the Winterland Ballroom on New Years Eve. Prairie Prince left the group shortly after and they hired British drummer Aynsley Dunbar (who had just finished working with John Lennon and Frank Zappa). Their 1974 Great American Music Hall performance earned them a Columbia Records recording contract and their first album was released in 1975.
