The Juno awards are awards that are presented to musical bands and artists annually. They are given out to Canadian artists to acknowledge their technical and artistic achievements in every aspect of Canadian music. Every year new members are inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The winners are usually chosen by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. But sometimes, depending on the type of award the winners are chosen by a panel of experts. For general awards such as Artist of the Year or Album of the Year, the nominees are selected at the end of the qualifying period by the amount of sales during that time. But in genre specific categories, the nominees are chosen by a panel of experts. The predecessor of the Juno Awards was the RPM Gold Leaf Awards which was given out every December during the years 1964 to 1969. Until then the award were just published in RPM and no formal award ceremonies took place. In 1970, the first official Gold Leaf Awards ceremony was conducted.
RPM then invited its readers to suggest a good name for the awards. Initially the name “Juneau” was suggested representing Pierre Juneau. This name was then shortened to “Juno” and from the year 1971, these awards came to be known as the Juno Awards. An advisory committee was later formed in the year 1974 with the committee being called as the Canadian Music Awards Association. In 1977, this committee took full management of the Juno Awards and came to be called as the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
