Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, TX. She was raised in the small town of Burleson, TX. She is the 3rd child of Jeanne Ann Rose who is a teacher. Her father Stephen Michael Clarkson was an engineer. Clarkson has got a brother Jason, and a sister Alyssa. When Clarkson was 6, her parents separated, having lived together for seventeen years. Jason began to live with the father, Alyssa started living with an aunt, and however Kelly was left at her mothers. Clarkson had to relocate quite often because her mother changed several jobs in order to get money for the family.

Kelly has always said that never understood why they had to move all the time as she was only six at the time. In the long run, the family remained in Burleson, where Kelly's mother got married to Jimmy Taylor.

Clarkson became a student of Pauline Hughes Middle School when she moved to the 7th grade. First she wanted to be a marine biologist, but once a teacher of music heard how Kelly sang in the hall of the school and proposed to audition for the school choir. Clarkson confessed that she had never been taught to sing professionally though. After the middle school, she went to Burleson High School and took roles in musicals, one of them was Brigadoon.

As soon as Kelly returned to school, some of her close friends suggested that she should audition for the 2002 first season of the reality show American Idol. She decided to try her luck together with 10,000 of other people, and the judges were really surprised at her voice. She received a position among the Top 30 finalists and gradually sang a song on live television to North America. When American Idol ended each week, the viewers had to vote according to the performance they liked best of all. Clarkson sang Aretha Franklin's "Respect" which resulted in a top ten position. Among other songs of Clarkson which she sang at American Idol are Céline Dion's "I Surrender", Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman, Badfinger's "Without You".
