Kenneth Donald "Kenny" Rogers was born on August 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas. He is well known as a country music singer, producer, actor, songwriter, photographer, and businessman.
In 1976, the singer left The First Edition, after having spent almost a decade with the group. Kenny signed a contract with United Artists. Producer Larry Butler and Kenny Rogers started a partnership that would run for four consecutive years.
Kenny’s first release for the new label was Love Lifted Me. The record charted and 2 singles "While The Feeling's Good" and "Love Lifted Me" were minor hits.
In 1980, Rogers began partnership with Lionel Richie. The latter wrote and produced Kenny’s no. one hit "Lady". Lionel continued writing and producing Kenny’s 1981 release Share Your Love, a chart topper and commercial favorite featuring hits such as "I Don't Need You" and "Through The Years".
In 1985, Kenny was one of the forty-five singers, who recorded the worldwide charity song "We Are the World. The song was released to support hunger victims in Africa. In 1987, the performer co-hosted the American Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in LA. From 1988 to 1990, Kenny saw the pinnacle of his music career, when new artists like Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks were emerging with a frightening force.
Kenny Rogers’ success is worldwide. The singer has played many great concerts in Europe and the Far East. He has charted many singles and albums from the ‘70s through to the present day. In the ‘90s, Kenny continued to chart with popular singles, including "If You Want To Find Love", "Crazy In Love", and "The Greatest".
In 1999, the performer scored with the single "The Greatest". This is a song about life seen with a child’s eyes (looked at through a baseball game). The single reached the Top Forty of Billboard's Country singles chart and became a CMT Number One video.
In the new century, Kenny was back at no. one for the first time in almost a decade. His 2000 single "Buy Me a Rose" made him, at the age of 61, the oldest singer in the history of country music to reach the chart summit; and thus he broke a 26-year-old record held by Hank Snow. Kenny held the record until 2003, when 70-year-old Willie Nelson set a new record with his duet with Toby Keith, titled "Beer For My Horses."
Most recently, Kenny released his new album, Water & Bridges. It peaked at no. 5 in the Billboard Country Albums sales charts. It charted high in the Billboard 200. The first single from the record, "I Can't Unlove You," is also a smash hit. Recently, Kenny Rogers completed a tour of the UK and Ireland. In one of the interviews on BBC Radio 2, Rogers told DJ Steve Wright that his favorite hit of his was "The Gambler".
