Lionel Richie joined the soul group The Commodores as lead singer and saxophonist in 1968. They were initially signed with Atlantic Records but switched over to Motown the following year. The Commodores supported the Jackson 5 on tour and released a couple of albums containing their hit singles “Machine Gun”, “Easy”, and “Three Times a Lady”. Their style ranged from funk and disco to easy love ballads. Richie started composing songs for other artists like Kenny Rogers and Diana Ross. He went solo in 1982. He has released 11 studio albums. His number one singles include: “Endless Love” (w/ Diana Ross), “Truly”, and “Say You, Say Me”. Lionel Richie has sold over 100 million records. Because of this, he can afford to be the father of the notorious socialite Nicole Richie and grandfather to her newborn girl, Harlow Winter Kate Madden. Lionel Richie has stated that he hopes for a reunion with The Commodores soon because ten years from now no one will care.
