Five-time Grammy Award-winning country singer, songwriter, and guitarist Mary Chapin Carpenter is well known for her diverse musical style. The musician returned with 2001's Time*Sex*Love after a five-year break from the music scene. Her departure was described by The New York Times as "a concept album about middle age."

One main theme in Mary's 2000s music is that of taking life at one's own pace, rather than goal-driven materialism, such as the album’s "The Long Way Home." That release was different musically: it incorporated elaborate orchestra melodies together with the characteristic lyrical depth. That is the main reason why it had less broad appeal than her earlier albums.

As of 2007, the musician has released 9 albums and 2 best-of compilations. In addition to Carpenter’s solo work, her career has included a number of collaborations with several artists, like Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, and Shawn Colvin. Being a well-known songwriter, Mary has written songs for a variety of performers, including Cyndi Lauper ("Sally's Pigeons"), Trisha Yearwood ("Where Are You Now"), and "Love Goes On" as a tribute to writer Marjorie Williams.

Mary Chapin Carpenter's new recording, entitled The Calling, was released by Rounder Records' rock/pop imprint Zoë in March 2007. The album features commentaries about contemporary politics and a reaction to Hurricane Katrina’s impact on a track entitled "Houston." The track "On With the Song" is dedicated to the Dixie Chicks and addresses the visceral reaction to the band.
