Mc Guffey Lane On Making a Living and Making Music
It is quite difficult to have a ticket to fame and make it big in the music industry – but this 1980's band just managed to do so. They are called Mc Guffey Lane, and their musical genre is country-rock. Terry Efaw is the band's founder. Other members included Stephen "Tebes" Douglass on keyboards, Dick Smith on drums, Bob "Gene" McNelley who played acoustic guitar and acted as vocalist, and guitarists John Schwab and Stephen Reis. Before becoming a sextet, the band was only a trio composed of Terry, Gene and Stephen.
Mc Guffey Lane had regular gigs on a club in Columbus, Ohio which served as their ticket to build a flock of loyal fans. They first had their major hit with the song called "Long Time Lovin' You" which is a cut from the album that they released on their own under the label Paradise Island. This ticket song was followed by "Start It All Over" which barely managed to make it to the top of the chart. However, just like with any other struggling band or artist, Mc Guffey Lane managed to score a big hit with the song "Making a Living's Killing Me" which served as their ticket to fame. The song made it to the Top 50 charts list. After releasing the album Aqua Dream, they had a follow-up recording and the album is entitled "Let the Hard Times Roll". At this point in their careers, members of the Mc Guffey Lane band had to make a decision about the artist packaging that they want and the audience that their music is intended for. The band decided to sign up under Atlantic Records so that their albums can be targeted for a country music audience, instead of pop.
Unfortunately, Douglass was killed in a car accident while the band was recording the album "Day by Day". Before the year closed, McNelly also met with death when he committed suicide after killing his fiancée in 1987. They disbanded in 1990 when their attempted comeback became unsuccessful. These events did not deter Mc Guffey Lane, however, since they still managed to record a Christmas album in 1995 as a ticket to a semi-comeback.
Their list of albums prior to being signed by a record label included: Aqua Dream, Let the Hard Times Roll, Day by Day, Call Me Lucky and Wood. In 1990, their self-titled album "Mc Guffey Lane" was released by Atlantic Records. Their next two albums were released in 1995 – "Mc Guffey Lane Christmas" and "Greatest Hits Live & More".
In spite of the colorful past and long history that the members of the Mc Guffey Lane band has gone through, they will still leave a mark on the music industry with some of the hit songs that their beloved following will always remember.
