Mummers are people that engage in colourful street parades. The word ‘Mummer' was derived from the German language and means “disguise “. Mummers adorned themselves in different costumes and colourful garments. Over 15,000 mummers participate in the parade/show each year. The Mummers tradition started as early as 400 BC when Latin labourers marched in painted faces and masks for a whole day during which jokes were said and gifts exchanged. In Philadelphia, as early as the revolution, groups of mummers have been known to march along the streets on New Year Day. more
Prizes were presented by merchants in the late 1800's.
Prizes in the range of $395,000 in cash could be awarded which is only a small percentage of the cost of the costumes. Thousands of white workers have since January 1, 1901, paraded the city in wild looking attires and painted their faces from head to toe. It is basically a merry practice that the mummers love to do. The number of people involved has however drastically reduced in recent times. Philadelphia has a history of mummers marching on the first day of every year. They are a fixture of the ethnic communities in South Philadelphia, and are grouped into social clubs. There is also a Museum Dedicated to Philadelphia Mummers in Washington Avenue, USA.
The 7-mile parade starts early in the morning and lasts till end of day. Philadelphians surround the route all day, clubs participating in the mummers' parade are judged, and the winning band is awarded the prize money. Mummers are categorized into four: String Bands, Comics, Fancies and Fancy Brigades. The String Bands are marching bands comprising saxophones, string basses, banjos, drums, accordions etc. The String Bands have evolved into highly choreographed, professionally dressed mummers. They practice all year round for their day in the sun, or whatever the weather condition. String bands are judged based on their music and costumes. less
