Artist Background Information - My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance (the name is often shortened to My Chem or MCR) is a pop rock group, whose members originate from New Jersey and Illinois, USA. The band was formed in 2001. Currently, it consists of lead vocalist Gerard Way, Mikey Way (on bass guitar), Bob Bryar (on drums), Frank Iero (on rhythm guitar), and Ray Toro (on lead guitar). Bassist Mikey Way was the one who came up with the idea of the band's name. He coined it from a book titled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, written by Irvine Welsh.

My Chemical Romance was formed by Gerard Way and ex-drummer Matt a couple of days after September 11 terrorist attacks. Way witnessed the planes crashing into the World Trade Center. He confessed that it influenced his life so much so that he decided to start a band. Later he wrote the song "Skylines and Turnstiles" to express his feelings about September 11 tragedy. Ray Toro was asked to join the group because he played the guitar really well.

The band’s first rehearsals were made in Matt Pelissier’s attic. They recorded the songs "Our Lady of Sorrows" and "Cubicles" there. The younger brother of Gerard Way, Mikey, loved the songs so much that he decided to learn to play the bass guitar and lately join his brother’s band.

In 2003, My Chemical Romance signed a contract with Reprise Records. The band went on a tour with Avenged Sevenfold and after that, they began working on their second album titled Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. Written in 2004, the album became platinum in a year and contained three singles "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena" and "The Ghost of You".

In 2004, Bob Bryar replaced Matt Pelissier, with whom they went on tour to Japan. The true nature of Pelissier's leaving was not clear: it either happened due to an argument with Ray Toro, or as a result of mistakes made by Matt during the band’s live performances.

At the beginning of 2005, the group went on the Taste of Chaos tour, and was the opening act for Green Day on their American Idiot tour. Later, Alkaline Trio and Reggie and the Full Effect joined My Chemical Romance on tour around the US. In April 2006, the group began recording their third album with Rob Cavallo, who had produced several of Green Day's albums. In October 2006, the band made an in-store performance in front of 500 fans at Virgin Megastores in Oxford Street, London, UK. In order to participate in the event, many group’s fans slept outside the shop the previous night.
