Once a year, the fans and followers of Latin Music, in its various genres, celebrate with the colourful awards ceremony, Premios de los Nuestros. It's a wide ranging affair, charting the progress and success of the five most popular types of music with a Latino flavour. Rivalling such grandiose pageants, such as the MTV music awards and the Grammies, Premios de los Nuestros has been going for two decades and celebrates its twentieth anniversary in Miami, Florida, USA this year, 2008. It's renowned for its glamour and spectacle and the flamboyant personalities and music it attracts.
The five categories are Pop, Rock, Tropical, of which separate sub-categories, Salsa and Merengue are sought, Regional Mexican and Urban. Prizes are awarded to Best Male and Female solo artists, Group/ Duo, New Soloist and Song for each category. Past winners include some great Latin and mainstream artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Tigres del Norte, Juanes and Shakira.
The awards show is organized and broadcast by the Television Network, Univision and boasts the highest Latino viewing in the United States for a single event. A combination of fiery, passionate music and the typical lavish, latino spectacle makes for a night of rigourous glamour. And this year's twentieth anniversary show promises to top all preceding ceremonies, with artists like Beyonce, Marc Anthony and pop teen-idol, Belinda performing for the crowds. Nominees this year include Paulina Rubio, Jennifer Lopez, Xtreme and Don Omar among countless others and is one show not-to-be missed.
