About R&B Music

By the 2000s, the blending between R&B and hip-hop had increased so much that in most cases, the only difference between a hip-hop and an R&B record is whether its vocals are rapped or sung. As of 2006, the most prominent R&B performers include Usher, Ashanti, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, and more. Soulful R&B is still popular, with singers, such as Alicia Keys, R. Kelly, and John Legend. Quiet storm is no longer dominant on the pop charts. Most of the prominent artists of this genre, including Babyface and Miki Howard, began their careers in the 1980s and 1990s. However, its influence can still be heard in singles, for instance, in Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together”. Several producers have developed some other styles of song production. Timbaland, for instance, became famous for his hip-hop and jungle based productions, after he produced several R&B hits for Aaliyah and Missy Elliott. Lil’ Jon became famous for a style that he termed Crunk & B, influenced by Southern hip-hop sub-classification of crunk music. Usher and Ciara, for instance, have also recorded R&B songs with strong crunk influences. However, by 2006, that sound had cooled in popularity.
