Regina Carter is a notable American jazz violinist. Though beginning as a classical violinist, she became increasingly interested in jazz. Now she is considered one of the best violinists in the genre. Carter’s close friend Carla Cook introduced her to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald. Carla Cook herself later became a successful jazz singer. Regina Carter received a degree in music from Oakland University, and then continued her studies at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
Regina Carter became the leader of her first band, an "electric band," in 1996. She gave a concert in Genoa on the Cannone Guarnerius of Niccolò Paganini in December 2001. Using the same violin, Regina Carter later recorded Paganini: After a Dream for Verve Records.
Carter is an active educator, mentor, and proponent of the Suzuki method. She has taught at several institutions, including the famous Berklee College of Music, and made two appearances at Stanford Jazz Workshop.
Currently, Regina Carter performs as the leader of a quintet. The band consists of Xavier Davis (piano), Alvester Garnett (drums), Mark Krose (clarinet), and Matt Parish (bass).
In September 2006, the musician was awarded with a MacArthur Fellows Program grant, which is also known as a "genius grant."
