Her father used to be an amateur violinist who’s also into photography. Meanwhile, her mother taught as a professor in music back in a Russian College. As the family got their ticket into the US, her mother now teaches at an elementary school found in New York, specifically in Mount Vernon.
Her early years of playing the piano found its ticket through her mother’s Petrof. This particular piano was handed down by her grandfather to her mother. Aside from self-taught lessons, Regina Spektor also drew early musical influence from early rock and roll bands that have been quite an icon during their time. These bands were the Beatles, The Moody Blues, and the Queen. She was able to sample these records through her father, who used to buy such albums in Easter Union and also engaged in trading cassettes with friend in Russia.
Spektor was always fond of creating her own songs, but it was not until her teenage years when she really became serious with the craft and saw it as a musical ticket. When she visited Israel under the Nesiya Institute, other children during the trip have shown appreciation for her original compositions which she made up out of the blue as they were hiking. It was then that Regina Spektor realized that she did have a knack for song composition.
After this, she went on to undergo and complete a studio composition program in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. This lasted for four years and Spektor was able to gradute with honors.
Eventually, Spektor began to find her ticket into the music scene by receiving recognition and positive feedback from her gigs in downtown New York. The musical scene she participated in was anti-folk. It was also during these period of recognition that Spektor began to sell and becomes successful in gaining consumers for a CD she herself produced.
