Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins is a jazz tenor saxophonist. He has had a long and a very productive jazz career. He played together with piano legend Thelonious Monk before he even reached the age of twenty. Sonny is still touring and recording. He managed to outlive several of his jazz contemporaries like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Art Blakey, with whom he has recorded.

The musician had begun to make a name for himself at the early ‘50s’, when he recorded with Miles Davis.
In 2004, Sonny Rollins was awarded with a Grammy for lifetime achievement.
After an extremely successful Japanese tour at the end of 2005, Sonny Rollins returned to his recording studio for the first time in five years. There he recorded the Grammy-nominated CD entitled Sonny, Please (2006). He also launched his own website and started his own label, named Doxy Records. It issued Sonny, Please that was produced by trombonist Clifton Anderson. In 2006, the musician completed the DownBeat Readers Poll triple win for the following categories: "Jazzman of the Year", "Number 1 Tenor Sax Player", and "Recording of the Year" for the release "Without a Song" (The 9/11 Concert)".
The city of Minneapolis in Minnesota State officially named 31 October 2006 after Sonny Rollins in honor of his great achievements and contributions to the world of jazz music.
