Steve Earle is a popular American songwriter and singer. He is famous for his rock and country music. He is also a well known political activist and a dramatist as well. He was dubbed the new age "Bruce Springsteen" for his efforts to revive country music.
Earle started his career as a songwriter in which he was successful. He has penned songs for many artists including Steve Wariner, Vince gill and Carl Perkins. He got his first taste of success with the track "when you fall in love".
His first album "guitar town" was released in 1986. It was successful and was certified gold. This album was quickly followed by "Exit O" and "Copperhead Road". His next album "The hard way" was released in 1990. By this time he was into drugs and he had to go to jail on firearm and drug charges.
Earle came out of jail a completely reformed man. He set up his record label and experimented with different styles. Immediately after his release, he released "Train a Comin'". After this album he started becoming much more diverse in his compositions. There were elements of folk, hard rock, country and blue grass music in his songs. There were many albums that were released after he came out of the jail. "I feel alright", "El Corazon", "The mountain", "Transcendental blues", "Jerusalem", and "The revolution starts...now". His most recent album is "Washington square serenade" which was released in 2007.
Earle has received a plethora of awards and nominations. He was nominated for the Grammy awards eleven times. In 1986 he was named country artist of the year by the magazine "Rolling stone". He also bagged the lifetime achievement award for songwriting in 2004 from BBC UK Radio 2. He was awarded the Grammy for best contemporary folk album in 2005.
