Sumner was born in Wallsend, near Newcastle upon Tyne, in northeast England. His relatives are Audrey Cowell and Ernest Sumner. Sting is the oldest out of four children of the family and he has got a brother, Philip, and two sisters, Angela and Anita. His father kept a dairy-farm, and in his childhood Sting used to help him with the milk deliveries. Sumner went to the Catholic Church because his grandmother originated from an Irish family.

From the very childhood, Gordon Sumner realized that he wanted his life to be connected with music. He tried to give his first music performances wherever he could find a job. He performed in the evenings, at the weekends, and during holidays from college and teaching. Sting got married to Frances Tomelty (an actress) from Northern Ireland, in 1976. He has got two children from Frances: Joseph and Fuchsia Catherine. The couple divorced in 1984.

In 1982, after the birth of their second child, Sting left Tomelty and began to date with an actress Trudie Styler. The couple got married in 1992. Sting and Styler have four kids: Bridget Michael, Jake, Eliot Pauline, and Giacomo Luke. The parents of Sting died from cancer in 1987.

Apart from being a great artist, having released more than 15 albums and having acted in more than 10 films and TV shows, Sting is also very active in assisting to make this world better. In the 80s Sting strongly supported environmentalism and humanitarian movements, namely Amnesty International. Together with his wife Trudie Styler and also Raoni Metuktire, who is a Kayapó leader in Brazil, he was among the founders of the Rainforest Foundation which strives to help to preserve the rainforests.
